I actually like the darker tones in this one. But, to answer your question about why the picture appears darker after you upload it; it might have to do with the color profile which gets attached to the picture when you convert it to grayscale. If you do your conversion to grayscale in photoshop by doing Image -> Mode -> Grayscale, then photoshop applies the Dot Gain 20% color profile to the image. Dot Gain 20% looks quite a bit darker when it's viewed through a browser which is expecting the sRGB color profile.
